Low self-esteem refers to a lack of self-confidence and the feeling of being unlovable and unworthy. People with low self-esteem see themselves as incompetent and inadequate in all aspects. Such beliefs bring in a negative outlook that hampers behaviour and life choices. All these lower self-esteem in people and degrade their quality of life. Many reasons lead to this condition. Sometimes an unhappy childhood may be one of the causes. Childhood traumas have a profound impact on our minds. The tender mind of a child, when exposed to negativity and violence, leave long-lasting impressions for life. Those memories take the form of nightmares that keep coming back time and again.

In some other cases, low self-esteem may be due to excess stress and fear. Stress is the cause of numerous psychological and physiological issues. Stress restricts one from facing challenges bravely and lowers self-confidence and self-esteem. If such a condition prevails for a long time, it may lead to severe issues like depression and anxiety.

Low self-esteem harms your day to day activities to a great extent. Hence, it is of utmost importance to take the necessary steps to work upon it. Some ways to improve your self-esteem are discussed below:

Positive Mindset

The quality of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts. Be careful while choosing your thoughts. If you find yourself surrounded with thoughts of fear and negativity, take a deep breath and start realigning them. You can improve your self-esteem by looking for the positive aspect in all situations. Sometimes life presents certain circumstances before us that we are not all prepared for. Those that hold on to the pain and anger start losing all hopes and confidence in life. But the ones that are courageous enough to outgrow such situations enhance their self-esteem in due course of time.

Meditation

Meditation has many proven benefits when it comes to improving low self-esteem. Regular meditation helps your brain to get into the zone of positivity by eliminating all hostile elements. It helps you to establish a deep connection with your inner being and appreciate the way it is. When you learn to accept and value yourself with all flaws and faults, it starts boosting your self-esteem. Meditation also treats all psychological issues and upgrades your mind to a calmer and better state. You feel good about who you are and the way things are around you. All such realisations have a profound impact on improving your self-esteem.

Exercise

Regular exercise is a must to have a fit and healthy body. Your body or outer appearance plays a vital role in determining your self-esteem. Exercise makes you feel fresh and tones your body. It also influences your mental state. It uplifts your mood, boosts your confidence and enhances your self-esteem. You don’t need to hit the gym or go for rigorous exercises for this purpose. For instance, go for a walk in the countryside, jog in your nearby park or try skipping at your balcony. However, you will feel the results of exercise in improving your self-esteem only if you maintain consistency.

Accept Challenges

People with low self-esteem are always petrified of hardships and challenges. As the saying goes “you can overcome your fear only by facing it”, it is the same criteria here. Life will keep on throwing challenges at you time and again. It is your choice whether to accept defeat or face them bravely. Make up your mind, trust your capabilities and face your fears with courage. Initially, it might not be an easy task, but as you go on, victory will be yours. Take challenges as opportunities to emerge stronger and wiser than before.

Low self-esteem handicaps a person to live life to the fullest. It infuses fear and doubts which when left untreated may become severe issues in future. So, follow the above tips and fight with your fears and insecurities to lead a life of confidence and high self-esteem.
